Peaceful Countryside Camping in the UK

If you’re looking for all things nature, with peace and quiet and a gentle pace, The Paddock Rutland Water Camp Site is not to be missed.

Situated with views over Rutland Water itself, this family-run campsite is beautiful; calm and peaceful with sunsets to die for.

This site was recommended by a friend, as we were new to this area and really keen to see Ospreys. We were not disappointed, as it was very pretty and near to the nature reserve where they nest, and so we were excited to explore.

Overview

This is a family-run, adults only site, with a low noise policy. The campsite is 4 acres with 15 generous level pitches, each with hard-standing and grass combination. The site is really well kept and very neat and tidy.

Pitches

On arrival we found our pitch, which was probably the biggest we have ever had, with a fabulous view! It was a combination of hard-standing and grass, with electric hook-up and very level. We had been given our pitch number and gate code prior to arriving, so we pitched ourselves and the friendly owner popped round to see everyone later on.

Booking and Check in

Booking is via their website (see link below) and info was sent to my email. No check in was needed.

Cost

Approx £26 per night depending on the pitch

Facilities

To attend this site, you need to be self-contained as there are no toilets or shower blocks. This suited us fine, as we have everything in the van. There is a chemical disposal point, recycling, drinking water and EHU.

Views

The site has incredible sunset views over the reservoir, and even has a viewing platform, which was lovely to sit and watch the sun go down with a cuppa.

Location

The campsite is situated on Lyndon Road, Oakham, relatively near to the nature reserve, which is approximately 1km through lovely woods, teaming with birds. There is a car park at the reserve too, if mobility is an issue.

The area offers many walks and cycle routes in the area, with a lovely ‘old England’ feel to the villages.

The Rutland Water Nature Reserve is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) with a great visitor centre and viewing platforms looking over the incredible wetlands (See Link below). It costs to get in (Link below) but we were fine with that, as the reserve was excellent. The Ospreys were easily visible from the viewing areas, along with masses of water birds and paddling cows!

So whether you’re an avid bird spotter, hiker, biker or a ‘chill out and enjoy the peace’ type, this campsite has it all, and we would highly recommend.
