Camping at Castlerigg Farm Campsite: What You Need to Know
If you’re looking for a peaceful campsite with stunning views, clean facilities, and easy access to some of the Lake District’s most iconic spots, Castlerigg Farm Campsite should be at the top of your list.
Nestled on a hillside just outside Keswick, this family-run campsite offers one of the most scenic camping experiences in Cumbria.
Our experience on Castlerigg Farm (not to be confused with ‘Castlerigg Hall’ on the other side) was really positive: very well run, clean and friendly with breathtaking views.
We were looking for a pitch at short notice in the height of summer and knew the chances were slim. However, we were surprised to ring and find that there was space available (grass- non EHU). It was definitely busy, and a tight-run ship, which we appreciated, having been to quite a few which are not, and it shows! (Unruly people, noise, litter). This site is sometimes criticised for its noise rules, but it suited us perfectly.
The site combines hard standing and grass pitches, with options of Electric Hook Up and Non EHU, for caravans, motor homes, campervans, and tents.

Check In
Ring to book. Pay for first night as a deposit, and the rest on arrival.
Professional reception check in with friendly greeting, maps and instructions. Explanations of route through the campsite, facilities and no noise policy. Reception staff radio to colleagues on the field to show you where to pitch.
Cost
We paid £33 a night for non EHU grass. See link below for full details.
Pitches
Hard-standing and grass. Bring your chocks! Some the grass pitches were a bit challenging.

Facilities
Very well run, with great facilities.
- Shop: well stocked
- Laundry
- Free clean showers, toilets, and sinks
- Drinking water, grey waste drop area, chemical disposal point
- Dry room
- Pot wash area
- Boot room
- Dog walk area and dog shower
- Picnic area
Location and Transport
The site is slightly out of Keswick (1.5 miles) which, especially in the busy season, was a relief, as we didn’t need to battle the crowds. However, it is possible to walk into Keswick, although it is a bit of a trek, and uphill all the way back.
There is a bus which runs past the campsite, so it is possible to get into the town via the bus, or head the other way to Ambleside and Grasmere.
Access to the site is up a single track road with a couple of passing places. It is a bit tight, but we did see some very large riggs which managed it!
Opposite the campsite is a coffee shop and a beer garden too.
Views
As the site is on a hill, it affords the most amazing, breathtaking 360 degree views over Derwentwater, Skiddaw and Blencathra.

Walks
This site is perfectly placed to hike all the mountains in the northern lakes, as long as you have transport. Castlerigg Stone Circle can be reached from the campsite. Others walk Walla Crag and Latrigg from the site, or walk round Derwentwater, from Keswick town centre.
